Ancient Thoughts and Processes

Past event - 2023
23 May The event will start at 19:00. Come and grab a drink beforehand - doors open at 18:00!
Kelly's Pub , Schottstraße 2
55116, Mainz
Since the dawn of man, humans have been curious about the happenings of yesteryear - be it recent history or ancient, evolutionary perspectives. Alexandar Milenkovic of Mainz University will take us to ancient Greece as he discusses the importance of visual perception and the process of seeing, and Maximilian Reuter will discuss the ancient biological process of DNA relocation and its importance in cancer.
Join us at 19 when it all starts, or already at 18 to grab a beer before the event.

Visual perception in ancient Greek scientific thought

Aleksandar Milenkovic (Doctoral researcher, Mainz University)
The sense of sight was a rather common topic of interest for early Greek thinkers, preserved in both philosophical and medical writings from the 5th century BCE onwards. In my research, I examine textual accounts from early philosophers and physicians that focus on the problem of visual perception. In my talk, we will explore together how they described the structure of the eye, its mechanisms, and the overall process of seeing.

DNA replication: A genomic obstacle run to keep us healthy

Maximilian Reuter (Postdoc, Institute of Molecular Biology, Mainz)
DNA replication is the complex process that allows every living cell to duplicate their genome faithfully before cell division. This process must ensure that the whole DNA content is copied precisely and in time. When disturbed, genomic instability can arise, which has implications for ageing and diseases like cancer. I will dive into the molecular principles of genome replication and focus on a protein complex, which unwinds the double-stranded DNA like a molecular zipper and feeds it to our "DNA copy machines", the DNA polymerases; happening millions of times in every body each day.
