As part of Postdoc Appreciation Week, we invite you to join us for a special seminar on September 17, 2024, featuring three accomplished postdocs from the Helmholtz Diabetes Centre. This seminar offers a unique opportunity to explore not only the innovative scientific projects of these three postdocs, but also their diverse career journeys. Topics will include applying for prestigious fellowships, transitioning into permanent academic roles and leadership positions, and discussing the advantages and challenges of careers in academia versus industry. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Dr. Christos Karampelias

The seminar will open with a presentation by Dr. Christos Karampelias, an Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR), led by Prof. Heiko Lickert. Christos studies pancreatic biology and diabetes, with a focus on the mechanisms of pancreatic beta-cell regeneration. His work combines single-cell transcriptomics, organoid cultures, and chemical screening, using pigs as a model organism.

Dr. Isabelle Serr

Our second speaker, Dr. Isabelle Serr, serves as both a postdoc and Deputy Head of the Department of Type 1 Diabetes Immunology, under Prof. Carolin Daniel, at the Institute for Diabetes Research (IDF). Isabelle’s research focuses on immunology, with an emphasis on immunological plasticity during the onset of islet autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Carolina Ballester-López

Finally, Dr. Carolina Ballester-López, a Scientific Project Manager at the IDR, will discuss her role in developing a groundbreaking therapeutic antibody targeting metabolic diseases. Carolina will also share insights from her previous position as a scientist at Roche, where she spent more than three years, before returning to academia.
